Q

Describe process of fractional distillation

A

Oil heated until most turns into gas
Gases enter fractionating column, liquid (bitumen)
drained off at bottom.
Fractional column hotter at bottom, cooler at top.
Longer hydrocarbons with high boiling points turn into liquids and drain out nearer the bottom. Shorter hydrocarbons with lower boiling points drain off nearer the top.
