Parts of the Brain Flashcards
Brain Stem
Most primitive area of Brain
Medula is responsible for heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure, swallowing, and coughing.
Pons. The primary role is body movement, sleep and dreaming.
Cerebellum
is responsible for coordinated movement, regulates muscle tone. Also plays a role in motor learning. Also balance.
Thalamus
Considered the relay station primarily for sensory information such as vision or hearing to various areas of the brain. Also directly connected to the registration of pain. Plays a role in language.
Hypothalamus
the main center for the control hunger, thirst, and body temperature.
Limbic System
Amygdala, Hypo-campus
Amygdala
Important role in emotions. Dr. Van Der Kolt determined that it has a primary function in traumatic emotional memory; these memories are considered to be non-verbal.
Hypo-campus
Primary role is memory in general. Detects new experiences and starts to register it in memory.
Parietal Lobe (Cerebral Cortex)
involved in sensation of touch. Contains somatosensory cortex, a strip of brain tissue were pain, pressure and temperature are registered. Responsible for making you aware of where your body parts are in space.
Frontal Lobe
Responsible for thinking, decision making, planning, problem solving. Also has some involvement with movement (motor cortex connected to frontal lobe). Associated with motivation and impulse control also.
Brocas area
in the frontal lobe responsible for speech production
Occipital Lobe
Specific function vision. works in conjunction with the hippocampus.
Temporal Lobe
involved with auditory reception. [Wernickes area is responsible for speech reception].
Parts Associated with sensory perception?
Temporal, Parietal, Occipital Lobe
Association Areas
They perceive
Right hemisphere
visual spacial relations, creativity. Registeres thing as a whole. Recognition and expression of emotion.
