What events escalated the problems in Northern Ireland? 1960’s
- Civil rights movements against the police force who were supposedly against catholics
- IRA were founded in 1964
- A catholic civil rights march was attacked by loyalists,
police did nothing to defend them
What type of person was Wilson seen as?
- Down to earth
- Modern
- ‘Hip’
What economic problems did Wilson face?
- Wild cat strikes
- High inflation
- Low exports
- Rejection from EEC
- Devalued pound
Why was Labours relation with the unions important?
- Most of voters are working class and in unions
- Trade unions funded the party
- Had control over strikes and could reduce them
- 50 labour MP’s were more loyal to unions than Wilson

- 3096 strikes
- 11 million working days lost
What were Labours social and economic achievements from 1964-1970?
- Liberalised laws( pro choice, homosexuality legalised, no death penalty,race legislations)
- Reduced inflation, payed off debts, increased exports
What were some social changes made by 1970?
- New school system
- Abortion legalised
- More social mobility due to uni availability
- Homosexuality decriminalised however still had to be kept private

P: Men no longer had to live double lives
more equality for everyone
L: Both partners had to be over 21
Had to be private
Lots were still oppressed for being gay
What was the triparte system?
A system where after primary education you would take an exam and based on your grade/skills you would be placed in either a grammar, technical or secondary modern school
What were these new polytechnic universities and why were they created?
- They focused on more practical skills like engineering
- Created to increase working class admissions to uni’s as it would let them attend uni around their working day schedule
In what way was TV and radio revolutionised?
- 91% of homes had a tv by 1970
- A new way to spread news
- New advertising methods
- launch of BBC 2
- car radios introduced and new music radios
- pirate radios which played music attracted the younger generation
What technological advancements were made in the uk?
- Radios became more popular
- Technology advances allowed more efficient production of goods
- Society became more efficient with faster transport
- British airways opened in 1964 and British people started going abroad for holiday
What changes and continuity were there to women in society?
Change: Women working more, access to higher and better education
Continuity: Were still expected to maintain a household, still a 30% pay gap
Who where the mods and what were their features?
New sub culture, listened to jazz, rode scooters
Who were the rockers and what were their features?
New sub culture, listened to rock’n’roll, rode motor bikes
What changes and continuity did youths experience?
Change: New social gangs came along with increased violence, new education Continuity: Working class boys entered programs to develop labour skills, working class girls entered programs to develop domestic skills
What changes and continuity did immigration see in the 60’s?
Change: Immigrant workers got more rights as government wanted to expand the economy, race acts passed to prevent discrimination, acceptance of new cultures became more popular
Continuity: Despite different acts racism was still big amongst some of the population, in 1970 government passed legislation to stop the flow of immigrants due to large inflow from Kenya
How was the special relation damaged?
- Wilson refused to send troops to Vietnam
- US had placed sanctions on the uk due to the Suez crisis
- applied to EEC again
What were Labours main foreign policy aims?
- Keep nuclear weapons
- Cut military budget
- Maintain relation with common wealth
- Gain entry to the EEC
When was the devaluation crisis?
1967
Why did labour government not want to use deflation as a way to reduce the budget deficit?
It would be a continuance of the ‘stop-go policies’
Would be going against their manifesto promises
What did labour set up to try tackle the budget issue?
They set up the department of economic affairs, however it failed in 1967 due to internal fighting
