Capacitive Method

A
  • Metal plates encased in plastic housing
  • Strong electrical field, weak magnetic field
  • High frequency electrical current alternates between two plates
  • Pt is part of electrical current
  • Energy absorbed superficially (skin), less in deeper tissue
  • Areas of low-fat content
  • Heats subcutaneous fat since it acts as insulator and resists passage of electric field

Inductive Method

A
  • Rigid metal coils encased in plastic
  • Strong magnetic field, weak electrical field
  • Coil creates electric current that creates magnetic field perpendicular to coil
  • Eddy current: oscillation of ions which causes heat in tissue
  • Pt is in magnetic field, NOT part of circuit
  • Heats tissue high in electrolytes (muscle, blood); respond best to magnetic field by producing heat
  • Use towel to avoid moisture that can heat up and burn pt

  • Select appropriate diathermy and device
  • Pt removes all metal and jewelry
  • Inductive applicator: wrap extremity with towel and wrap applicator around extremity
  • Drum applicator: 2-10 cm over treatment area
  • Call bell
  • Rx time: 15-30 min

UV - Parameters

A
  • PT determines MED
  • Pt wears goggles
  • Lamp positioned at 90˚ to area being treated and 24-40 inches from area
  • Initial Rx time depends on MED (15-75 sec)
  • Tx time increased each consectutive session
  • Examine treatment area

UV Dosage

A
  • Suberythemal: Absence of erythema 24 hours after UV exposure
  • Minimal Erythemal Dose: Produces erythema that appears 1-8 hours and fades without trace within 24 hrs
  • 1st Degree Erythemal Dose: Erythema lasts 1-3 days, clear redness, mild desquamation; 2.5 x MED; used if target area less than 20% of body
  • 2nd Degree Erythemal Dose: Intense Erythema, edema, peeling pigmentation, itching; 5 x MED
  • 3rd Degree Erythemal Dose: Erythema with severe blistering, peeling, exudation; 10 x MED; used on areas less than 10 sq. in.
