1c. Cognitive dissonance Flashcards
(5 cards)
Cognitive dissonance
Unpleasant cognitive state that occurs when there is a discrepancy between attitudes and behavior.
we do/think something that doesn’t align with our beliefs
How to reduce cognitive dissonance
1- change behavior
2- change attitude
3- trivialize the inconsistency
Dissonance operates once a decision has been made
Mismatch between attitudes and behaviour
when the compensation (to act in the opposite way of your attitude) is enough, there’s a moral conflict, because we are doing something that doesn’t align with our beliefs
When the compensation is not enough, it justifies our behavior, reducing cognitive dissonance
Effort justification
tendency to reduce dissonance by rationalising the time, effort or money spent on something that has turned out to be disappointing
Induced compliance
subtly forcing someone to behave in a manner inconsisten with your beliefs, values or attitudes to produce dissonance
