Q

What happens to secreted proteins after they enter the lumen?

A

The proteins move through the golgi apparatus and are then packaged into secretory vescicles. These vescicles move to and fuse with the plasma membrane, releasing the proteins out of the cell

Q

How are many secretory proteins synthesised?

A

As inactive precursors that then require proteolytic cleavage to produce active proteins

Q

What is an example of a secretory protein that requires proteolytic cleavage and why?

A

Digestive enzymes, this prevents them becoming active in an inappropriate location and causing damage to the cell
