Bisque
Clay that has been fired, at about cone 06, but is yet unglazed
Bat
A slab or disk made of plaster, wood, masonite, or plastic which is used to support clay works-in-progress
Clay
Decomposed granite-type rock broken down into very fine particles allowing it to be plastic
Earthenware
Low-fire pottery, a natural clay, usually tan or red in color but can also be white
Porcelain
A mixture of kaolin, ball clay, feldspar, and flint
Stoneware
A mixture of several natural clays, plus alumina and silica to give it the desired qualities of plasticity, color, and firing temps
Cone
A small cone made of ceramic materials made to bend at specific temperatures
Crawling
When the fired glaze reacts, or pulls away, exposing the bare clay body
Firing
The process of heating ceramic pieces in a kiln
Glaze
A liquid suspension of finely ground minerals consisting of the elements of silica, alumina, and a flux, in water
Greenware
Pottery that has not been bisque fired
Grog
Hard-fired clay that has been pulverized into tiny particles and then added into wet clay to help reduce shrinkage and warping
Kiln
A furnace or oven made of refractory materials for heating ceramic pieces
Leatherhard
The condition of a clay piece when much of the moisture has left the body thereby allowing it to hold it’s shape but still not soft enough to carve
Plasticity
The quality of clay that allows it to be manipulated and still maintain is shape with cracking; workability
Scoring
Scratching the surface of leather hard clay
Slip
Clay and water mixed to a creamy consistency
Throwing
Creating a symmetrical pot with the use of a potters wheel
Vitreous
When clay becomes hard, dense, glassy, and non-absorbent
Wedging
Removing air pockets from a body and at the same time mixing it so the clay is a uniform texture
Relief
Sculpture consisting of shapes carved on a surface so as to stand out from the surrounding background
Foot, Body, Lip, Shoulder, Neck
Anatomy of a pot
Alumina, Silica, Flux
Three main dry ingredients of glaze
Coil, Pinch, and Slab Pots
Three ways to make pottery using only the hands
