A
- Clears qi-level heat and drains fire: used to treat high fever with no chills, irritability, intense thirst, profuse sweating, a big flooding pulse, and a red tongue with yellow coat.
- Clears Lung heat: used to treat bronchitis, pneumonia, and pulmonary abscess due to excess Lung heat. Sypmtoms may include: dyspnea, coughing, wheezing, red face, red tongue, and a forceful pulse.
- Clears Stomach fire: used to treat toothache, headache, orbital pain, canker sores, stomatitis, and swollen painful gums.
- Clears heat and heals the skin: used to treat eczema, burns, ulcers, and necrosis. Use internally and/or topically.

- Drains damp heat - lin (urinary dysfunction) syndrome due to damp-heat in the lower jiao, damp-heat and constrained LV and GB causing jaundice, damp-heat in the GB and SJ channels of the face (eyes, nose, sores in the mouth and face)
- Cools the blood, stops bleeding - nosebleed, blood in vomit, stool, urine; (needs to partially charred).
- Topically for blood stasis due to trauma, reduces swelling.

- Clears heat and regenerates fluids: used to replenish fluids lost from heat conditions, to treat high fever, irritability, and thirst.
- Clears Lung heat and opens the Lungs: used to treat damaged Lung yin causing heat accumulation and impaired Lung circulation. Symptoms may include: dry mouth, dry or tickling throat, chest oppression, expectoration of thick, yellow sputum.
- Clears Stomach Heat: used to treat damaged Stomach yin with heat accumulation leading to qi reversal, causing thirst with nausea, vomiting, and belching.
- Stimulates urination and clears heat: used to treat dark, scanty urine or blood in the urine, with irritability and thirst.
Vents rashes: used to treat the early stage of measles.
- Treats food poisoning: used to treat nausea and vomiting due to fish and crab poisoning, as well as overconsumption of alcohol.
