2 - audiometry (AHPs) Flashcards
what is pure tone & warbal tone?
pure tone = single frequency
warbal tone = more than 1 frequency
what used to measure air conduction threshold?
headphones & insert earphones
= assess entire auditory pathway
what used to measure bone conduction thresholds?
bone transducers - bypass external&middle ear just stimulating inner ear
what is mild, moderate, severe & profound hearing loss?
mild hearing loss - 20-40 dBHL
moderate - 41-70
severe - 71-95
profound - 95+
what is masking in audiometry test?
- can be hard to know which ear sound coming from, if have good ear & bad ear then good ear will just listen more to compensate
- masking os when narrow band masking noise is used to distract good ear so like force bad ear to be tested
what are 3 types of hearing loss?
- sensorineural
- conductive
- mixed
what is sensorineural hearing loss?
- also known as sensory/cochlear/inner ear hearing loss
- permanent SNHL can be from damaged hair cells in cochlea or CN VIII nerve
caused by prolonged exposure to loud noise, ototoxic drugs, certain diseases, birth complications, benign tumours of auditory nerve, genetics
what is conductive hearing loss?
= sound not being able to pass to inner ear
caused by ear infections, middle ear fluid (glue ear), perforated ear drum
what is mixed hearing loss?
combination of both damage to outer&middle ear and inner ear
caused by genetic, birth defects, infections, tumour etc
what is tympanometry?
assessment of conduction through eardrum (assess middle ear) - not hearing test but energy transmission test
