2 Earth History Flashcards
(10 cards)
Consist of the sun and everything that orbits, or travels around the sun
Solar system
Any of the large bodies that revolve around the sun in the solar system
Planets
The star around which the Earth orbits
Sun
The solid outer most layer of our planet, a thin shell of rock that surrounds the entire earth
Earth’s crust
The mixture of gases around the Earth
Atmosphere
A large body of salt water that covers a significant portion of the Earths surface
Oceans
The rigid outer part of the Earth, consisting of the crust in the upper mantle
Lithosphere
The upper layer of the earths mantle, a portion of the earths mantle that flows like molded plastic despite being solid
Asthenosphere
What were the basic steps in the formation of the Earth?
Protoplanetary disk of dust and gas surrounding the young sun, where materials, collided, and stuff together, forming planetesimals. These planetesimals grew through collisions and impacts, eventually forming the Earth.
Compare and contrast the for basic parts of the Earth (air, land, water, life).
Atmosphere (air) is a layer of gas surrounding earth, primarily composed of nitrogen and oxygen. Geosphere (land) is the solid part of the Earth, including rocks, soil, and the earths crust. Hydrosphere (water) is all water on earth. Biosphere (life) is all living organisms on earth and their environments.
