Discuss Luther and his impact on the reformation?

A
  • Born in 1483, Eisleben.
  • 1505: Luther joined the Augustinian monastery.
  • concerned with issues of salvation and damnation, he joined the monastery which was his surest guarantee of eternal life.
  • envisioned God as a severe judge.
  • great discovery in 1515 when he began to lecture on the book of Romans
  • 97 thesis raised little attention.
  • later constructed the 95 theses against the sale Of indulgences expecting the same result, but it was translated into German and rapidly spread,
  • diet of worms in 1521

Action against Luther?

A

1519: Johannes Eck in debate accused Luther and his 95 theses and and subsequent writings taught or implied opposition to the church.
1520: papal bull- Luther must recant or be excommunicated (2months to decide). Luther protests and burns bull
1521: Luther is excommunicated

Summoned by Reichstag and emperor Charles v to diet of worms to recant

1521: declared an outlaw at the hearing and issued with a warrant for arrest under penalty of death

What happened after the diet of worms?

A

Frederick the wise of Saxon saves him.

Spent one year at Wartburg castle- translated the New Testament into German in 11 weeks and standardized the German language.

Returned to Wittenberg, begins to write and spread his beliefs.

1524: peasants war led by Thomas münzer- violently killed in protest

What happened in 1555?

A

Charles V hands the war over to his brother Ferdinand.

Ferdinand in turn agrees to the peace of Augsburg.

  • acknowledges Lutheran as a religious option in the empire
  • rulers are free to determine if their realms are Lutheran or catholic.
