Q

State the 5 functions of the liver.

A

Breaks down hormones, breaks down haemoglobin (found in dead red blood cells), creates products that are added to bile and disposed through the digestive system, breaks down or modifies toxic substances and most medicines and converts ammonia to urea

Q

What is homeostasis and identify substances whose levels are controlled by homeostasis?

A

Homeostasis is the process of maintaining a constant internal environment. Temperature, water content, available energy, available oxygen and concentration of wastes in the blood are all maintained by homeostasis

Q

Know the difference between stimulus and response and give an example.

A

A stimulus is something that provokes a reaction in a muscle or tissue. A response is something that you would do to control the stimulus. For example: being out in the sun with warm clothing on. The sun being hot would be the stimulus and sweat would be an involuntary response from your body. A voluntary response would be to take a layer of clothing off.
