(17 cards)
What are the principle benefits of hydronic underfloor heating over other
traditional radiator heating systems?
improved comfort
energy efficiency
saves spaces
zonal control
less durability and low maintenance
why do we heat buildings
thermal comfort
health and well being
prevents building damage
better occupant productivity
why is ventilation necessary in buildings occupied by humans
removes co2
supply fresh oxygen
helps control humidity and moisture
removes indoor air pollutants
odour control
temperature regulation
List the 8 important checklist factors that should be considered when
designing a passive solar building.
building orientation
window placement and glazing
thermal mass
insulation
air sealings
shadings and overhangs
zoning and layout
site considerations
what is a ring circuit
a method of wiring socket outlets where the circuit starts and ends at the consumer unit
what are the main characteristics of a ring circuit
wired with 2.5mm squared twin and earth cable
have a protection device which breaks circuit
can serve up to 100msquared of floor area
balanced load sharing which helps with voltage drop and cable heating
what is a residual current device
a safety device used in electrical systems to detects any leakage current or earth faults and quickly disconnect the power to prevent electrical shocks and fire
how does a rainwater harvesting tank work
the rainwater falls onto the catchment area and flows into the gutter system where it is sent to the first flush diverter, this will discard any initial runoff and the remaining water passes through the pre filter.
filtered water enters the storage tank for later use
excess water is expelled through the overflow outlet when the tank reaches capacity
water is drawn from the tank via the outlet valve and pumped to desired location
why is humidification control necessary in heating and ventilation
better thermal comfort
better health
protects materials
better electrostatic control
better quality control in hops and warehouses
what are the two main ways water is delivered into air streams
Steam humidification - steam is generated and directly injected into airstream
Evaporative or Adiabatic Humidification - water is evaporated into the air
what are three main elements of an intruder detection system
detection devices - cameras, glass break sensors, door/window contact sensors
control panel - monitors all connected detectors
alarm devices - loud alarms, flashing lights
what are the main ways an intruder can be detected
motion detection
perimeter breach
impact detection
sound detection
surface activation
What are the main design characteristics of a waste chute for a high rise building
usually made from durable and fire resistant materials
at least 300mm diameter
designed to be fire safe included fire rated shaft and self closing fire doors
vent installed at top to help gas and odor escape
each floor has hopper doors for access to shoot
chute discharges into a collection room
smooth interior surfaces for cleaning
sound insulation installed
What are the main differences between a dedicated mechanical smoke
exhaust system and utilisation of a building’s existing HVAC system for
smoke control?
dedicated smoke system specifically designed to extract smoke
HVAC mainly designed for thermal comfort
dedicated smoke system optimized to remove smoke rapidly
HVAC retrofitted for limited smoke control capabilities
dedicated smoke control provides airflow control HVAC has limited airflow control
dedicated smoke control automatically triggered
HVAC may require manual overide
what are the main types of condensation
Surface condensation - warm moist indoor air contacts a cold surface
interstitial condensation - forms within building materials
cold bridge condensation - happens at thermal bridges
what important parameters influence condensation
air temperature
surface temperature
relative humidity
dew point
ventilation
insulation
what parameters influence thermal comfort
air temperature
radiant temperature
air velocity
humidity
