Metals (finish this) Flashcards
Cast-Iron
FERROUS METAL
Hard skin soft core, strong under compression but cannot be forged.
USES
heavy crushing machinery, car brake discs, Vice or machine parts
Mild steel
FERROUS METAL
Tough, ductile and malleable. Poor resistance to corrosion cannot be hardened and tempered.
USES
Nails, screws, car bodies, furniture frames, Building frames and structures.
Medium carbon steel
FERROUS METAL
Strong and hard but less ductile, tough or malleable
USES
Garden tools, springs
High carbon steel
FERROUS METAL
Very hard, difficult to cut and less ductile, tough or malleable
USES
Screwdrivers, scissors, chisels
Stainless Steel
FERROUS METAL
Hard and tough but very good resistance to corrosion
USES
Sinks, cutlery, work surfaces, dishes
High speed steel
FERROUS METAL
Vey hard, resistant to friction and can only be sharpened by grinding.
USES
Lathe cutting tools, Drills, Milling cutters
Copper
NON-FERROUS
Malleable, ductile and tough. Good conductor of heat and electricity. easily joined green pa
