Respiratory Imaging Flashcards
Lung Biopsy
Tuberculosis
1) Caseating granuloma
Lung biopsy
Blastomycosis
1) Found in south eastern united states
2) Causes most severe sytemic fungal infection
3) Forms granulomatous nodules
4) Broad based budding (same size as RBCs)
Lung Biospy
Histoplasmosis (Histo Hides in macrophages)
- Found in the Ohio river valley
- Found in bird and bat droppings
- Causes pneumonia
Lung Biopsy
Coccidioidomycosis (desert fever) (Coccidio crowds)
- Found in southwestern US
- Spherule filled with endospores
- Can disseminate to bone and skin
- Causes pneumonia and meningitis
- Think CODY
Pt. presents with progressive dyspnea and cough. Fibrosis on lung CT and eventually resutls in diffuse fibrosis wit end stage ‘honeycomb’ lung
Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
What is the patient with this microscopic lung finding at an increased risk for? What is the disease this pt. has?
1) Increased risk of bronchogenic carcinoma and mesothelioma
2) Asbestosis
Systemic non-caseating granulomas in multiple organs
- Most common in the lungs and hilar lymph nodes
Sarcoidosis
Lung biopsy
Squamous cell carcinoma
Lung Biopsy
Adenocarcinoma
Lung biopsy
- Pt. was a non-smoker
- Had pneumonia like presentation
Bronchioloalveolar adenocarcinoma
- Consists of tall columnar cells that grow along preexisting bronchioles and alveoli (Lepidic growth)
Lung Biopsy of an Immunocompromised pt.
CMV infection
- Look at the internuclear inclusion bodies
Lung biopsy of a polyp like mass in the bronchus
Carcinoid tumor
- Nests of neuroendocrine cells
Thoracic imaging
Spontaneous pneumothorax
Thoracic imaging
Tension pneumothorax
- All structures go away due to increased air pressure
