2.2 — rainfall and temperature patterns Flashcards
(7 cards)
Explain
Where does high rainfall occur?
In low-latitude regions near the equator.
Explain
Why does high rainfall occur where it does?
An increased amount of insolation leads to more evaporation of water, helping cloud coalescence.
Explain
Where does moderate-high rainfall occur?
In mid-latitude regions.
(~23-55° latitudinally from the equator.)
Explain
Why does moderate-high rainfall occur where it does?
It’s mostly created by the development of cold fronts within subpolar systems.
Explain
Where does low rainfall occur?
In high-latitude regions, away from the equator.
Explain
Why does low rainfall occur where it does?
lack of insolation promotes less evaporation
less evaporation means no cloud coalescence and rainfall.
(this is the reason why oceans don’t get much rainfall)
Explain
Why coastal areas experience more rainfall than inland areas?
- Humidity causing evaporation
- Winds aiding evaporation
