To promote values through sport
Teamwork can be developed through sport. This allows people of all ages to appreciate the importance of working together to achieve a shared goal.
Tolerance may be developed by participants as they learn to accept the decisions and behaviours of others, some of these they may not approve of. This can help to develop strong self-discipline.
Respect can also be generated by respecting the rules of the game, respecting the opposition, also having respect for sportsmanship, equal opportunities and co-operation. This links to fair play too.
Inclusion can be improved via sports development for certain groups and individuals. For example, Sport England are using ‘alternative investment streams’ to support and include groups such as disabled people, women and girls and black and ethnic minority groups.
Citizenship can be developed through sports development by positively promoting community roles and behaviours.
To support social policy
Anti-discrimination is a key theme for Sport England in it’s sports development activities. It ensures that all organisations that it funds including NGBs make efforts to engage with groups who may traditionally may not have participated in sport.
Crime reduction has been influenced by sports development. For example, the Kickz football programme in London is aimed at 12-18 year olds and educates them on drug awareness and healthy eating to help reduce crime.
Health initiatives in sport are being used to help increase the levels of physical activity among the population. Although over 50% of the adult population are now involved in the required amount of physical activity each week. 33% of boys and 25% of girls meet the target of 60 minutes of exercise per day.
