2.2.2 Solubility of group 2 compounds : Hydroxides and Sulfates Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
Trends in group 2 reactions with water going down group?
A
Solutions formed become more alkaline
The higher concentration of OH- ions formed, the more alkaline it is.
MORE SOLUBLE IT IS, MORE ALKALINE, HIGHER pH
2
Q
Equation of how hydroxides dissolve in water? Describe it
A
X(OH)2 (aq) → X2+ (aq) + 2OH- (aq)
Down the group they get more soluble, more of the metal oxide dissolves so more OH- released and so more alkaline with a higher pH
3
Q
Trends in group 2 sulfates as they react with water?
A
Solubility decreases as you go down group
4
Q
What is the general reaction for group 2 oxides with HCL?
A
XO (s) + 2HCl (aq) → XCl2 (aq) + H2O (l)
