2.2.4 - VSEPR Theory Flashcards
(24 cards)
What does VSEPR in VSEPR Theory stand for?
Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion
What does VSEPR Theory involve?
only outer energy level, electrons pair through bonds or lone pairs, electrons spread out because they repel
What does repulsion apply to in VSEPR Theory?
both bonds and lone pairs
What are electron domains essentially?
negative charge centres
How many electron domains do double and triple bonds count as?
one
What differs double and triple bonds if both are only one electron domain?
they are higher in electron density
What does the total number of electron domains around the central atom determine?
the arrangement of the bonds and the lone pairs in 3D space (shape)
What is the shape of a molecule based off of?
the angle between the bonds
Why do lone pairs of electrons have a higher charge density than bonding pairs?
because the two electrons of the lone pair are not spread between two atoms
What contributes to a molecule having a distorted shape?
having lone pairs of electrons rather than all bonds
How are shapes of molecules determined?
based on how many electron domains the central atom has and how many lone pairs make up those domains
What is the shape of a molecule with 2 electron domains?
linear
What are the bond angles of the linear shape?
180
What is the shape of a molecule with 3 electron domains, no lone pairs, all bonds?
trigonal planar
What are the bond angles for a trigonal planar shape?
120
What is the shape of a molecule with 3 electron domains, one lone pair, 2 bonds?
trigonal planar bent
what are the bonding angles for a trigonal planar bent shape?
<120
What is a possibility when there are three electron domains?
an incomplete octet
What is the shape of a molecule with 4 bonding domains, no lone pairs, all bonds?
tetrahedral
What are the bond angles for a tetrahedral shape?
109.5
What is the shape of a molecule with 4 electron domains, 1 lone pair, 3 bonds?
tetrahedral trigonal pyramidal
What are the bond angles for a tetrahedral trigonal pyramidal shape?
<109.5
What is the shape of a molecule with 4 electron domains, 2 lone pairs, 2 bonds?
tetrahedral bent
What are the bond angles for a tetrahedral bent shape?
«109.5
