A
  • long stretch of sand
  • one end joined to mainland, other projecting out to sea or extending partway across a river estuary
  • sediment carried along coast by longshore drift
  • sheltered bay where coastline changes=constructive waves have less energy and deposit material
  • process continues and accumulation of sand/shingle develop
  • wind/currents curve end of spit
  • salt marsh develops behind
