2.3 Reproduction Flashcards
(26 cards)
How many chromosomes does a human body cell have?
46, this is a diploid number of chromosomes.
What types of cells have a haploid number of chromosomes?
Gametes, they have half the number of chromosomes (23).
What types of gametes are present in animals?
Sperm cells and egg cells.
What organ produces and holds sperm cells?
Testes.
Which organ produces and holds egg cells?
Ovaries.
What types of gametes are present in plants?
Pollen cells and ovule cells.
Where are pollen cells produced in plants?
At the anther.
Where are ovule cells produced in plants?
In the ovary.
What is fertilisation?
Fertilisation is the fusion of the nuclei of the two haploid gametes to produce a diploid zygote, which decides to form an embryo.
What is the urethra?
A tube from which sperm leaves the body.
What is the scrotum?
Skin that holds the testicles outside the body.
What is the sperm duct?
A tube sperm travel along on the way to the urethra.
What are the glands?
They add fluid to nourish the sperm.
What is the uterus?
The place where a foetus will develop.
What is the oviduct (fallopian tube)?
A tube which the egg cell will travel along on its way to the uterus.
What is the cervix?
A narrow opening between the vagina and uterus.
What is the lining of the uterus?
The walls of the uterus which will thicken every month ready to receive a fertilised egg.
What is the vagina?
The place where sperm will enter the body.
What is the stamen?
The male sex organ - made of the filament and the anther.
What is the anther?
The part of the male sex organ which makes pollen.
What is the filament?
A thin stalk that supports the anther.
What is the carpel?
The female sex organ - made of the stigma, the style, and the ovary.
What is the stigma?
The top of the female sex organ which collects pollen.
What is the style?
The part which connects the stigma to the ovary.
