2.3 - The Metallic Model Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
List the 4 properties of metals
A
- Good thermal conductor
- Good conductor of electricity
- Malleable
- Ductile
2
Q
Describe metallic bonding
A
Non-directional, made up of the electrostatic attraction between the lattice of cations and sea of electrons.
3
Q
Why are metals malleable?
A
Non-direction bonding allows for layers to slide across each other.
4
Q
List the 3 factors that determine the metallic bond strength
A
- Charge on the ion - larger = stronger
- Ionic radius of the ion - smaller = stronger
- Number of delocalized electrons
5
Q
Why do transition elements have stronger metal bonds and higher conductivity?
A
Higher density of delocalized electrons as d-block is all delocalized.
