Plate margins Flashcards

1
Q

Oceanic/Continental Destructive

A

Oceanic crust denser so subducted. Deep sea trench formed at the subduction zone. Crust melts in mantle and floats back to the surface and erupts

Q

Oceanic/Oceanic Destructive

A

Deep sea trench formed triggering earthquakes and eruptions. Melted materials rise to create a chain of volcanic islands (Island arcs)

Continental/Continental Destructive

A

Rocks crumble together to form fold mountains (Himalayas)- or forms earthquake as neither can subduct eachother

Q

Continental/Continental Constructive

A

Plates moves apart and magma rises and causes rift valleys. Volcanoes form when magma melts due to pressure then rises. Earthquakes occur due to plates moving non-uniformally, the plate cracks causing a fault line

Conservative

A

Two plates move past each other get locked together and pressure builds up. They jerk past each other releasing energy as an Earthquake
