Describe the onset of schizophrenia
Usually gradual in nature with an active phase- “first psychotic break”
What are the positive signs of schizophrenia?
psychotic symptoms: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech
What are the negative signs of schizophrenia?
represent deficits in normal function: no outward reaction to stimuli, lack of motivation, decrease in production, inability to experience pleasure

What is the cardinal feature of schizophrenia?
lack of insight that symptoms and difficulties that stem from them are products of a mental illness that requires treatment
To diagnosis schizophrenia the patient must have two or more of what of the following? How long must the symptoms persist?
- delusions
- hallucinations
- disorganized speech
- grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
- negative symptoms (flat affect)
Symptoms must exist for at least 6 months, with at least one month of symptoms that meet the above criteria
What is indicative of a good prognosis in schizophrenia?
- onset older than 20
- stable occupational record

What comorbid condition is MOST likely to exist in a schizophrenic patient?
smoking! 70-80% will smoke
Life expectancy of a schizophrenic patient?
20% lower than the average population
Psychotic symptoms that occur after a significant external stressor for one month or less and the resolve completely

Tx for brief reactive psychosis
improving coping skills because this can be instigated by lack of them
