2.3.8 Translation Flashcards

1
Q

What is translation

A
  • Cytoplasm
  • After leaving nucleus via nuclear pores, mRNA strand attaches to a ribosome
  • In cytoplasm there are free molecules of tRNA
  • tRNA contains a triplet of unpaired bases called the anticodon at one end, and a region where specific amino acids can attach to at the other
  • tRNA binds with specific amino acids
  • Brings them to mRNA molecule on ribosome
  • Anticodons on tRNA molecules pair with complementary codon on mRNA molecule
  • 2 tRNA molecules fit onto the ribosome at a time, and a peptide bond is formed via a condensation reaction between the 2 amino acids, joining them
  • Process continues until a stop codon on mRNA is reached, and translation stops
  • Amino acid chain is complete, and final polypeptide is formed
