What does the term organic refer to?
Used for compounds of carbon in general
What do all organic compounds contain?
carbon and hydrogen.
some contain oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorous and halogens
Define functional group
Refers to the atom/group of atoms that gives the compound its characteristic properties
What is a homologous series?
A series of compounds with the same functional group
What does the functional group define?
Which homologous series the compound belongs to
What are hydrocarbons?
A compound of carbon and hydrogen only
What is a saturated compound?
One in which all the C-C bonds are single bonds
What is an unsaturated compound?
Compound contains C to C multiple bonds
State the functional group of an alkane.
saturated hydrocarbons, no C to C multiple bonds
State the functional group of an alkene.
unsaturated hydrocarbons with a C to C double bond
State the functional group of halogenoalkanes.
one or more hydrogens have been replaced by a halogen in an alkane
