Introduction To Social Psych Flashcards
Why should we bother with social psych research?
Because many situations show us our errors in our judgements
We rely on heuristics and have short sightedness
What is the difference between social psych and personality?
Personality is concerned with individual differences in behaviour and consistency across different situations
Social psych is concerned with reactions to situational influences. It is the scientific study of the feelings, thoughts and behaviours of individuals in social situations
What is the insufficient justification and dissonance experiment by festinger and carlsmith in 1959?
Subjects do 2 boring 30 minute tasks
The subjects were told beforehand that task was going to be fun and the other subjects were not told anything
E tells next subject that they just finished and they found it extremely enjoyable (a lie)
What was the dependent variable in the experiment by Festinger and Carlsmith?
Asking how fun and enjoyable you found the task before leaving
What was the independent variable for the experiment by Festinger and Carlsmith
No pay and no lie vs $1 for lying (insufficient justification ) vs $20 for lying (sufficient justification)
Where do research questions come from?
Testing a theory
Curiosity
Testing techniques
Demonstrating a phenomenon
What is the setup of the research process?
1- Research question 2- Generate hypothesis 3- Operationalise( measure what, how?) 4- Design experiment/correctional study 5-collect data 6- Analyse data 7- Draw appropriate conclusions
What are the basic designs for social research?
Within subjects Between subjects Factorial design Quasi- experimental designs Correlational designs
What is attributions?
The processes by which we makes inferences about the causes of behaviours or events
What is the naive scientist theory?
Characterises people as using rational, scientific- like , cause-effect analyses to understand their world
