Q

What is the cultural conservative critique of mass culture?

A

Cultural conservatives believe that commerce and capitalism are the enemies of spirituality and culture and that capitalism only creates crass materialism.

17
Q

Why don’t conservatives like levelling?

A

Because they believe that by taking away form those at the top to give to those at the bottom, a lot is being taken off the top while not much is being added to the bottom. This results in everyone being worse off and is a misguided attempt towards equality which conservatives don’t like because that would create stagnation and threaten the aristocracy.

18
Q

How did conservatism develop in the US in the late 19th century and what was it reacting to?

A

Conservatism grew in the US because it got caught up in laissez-faire capitalism and served as the classical liberal opposition to the rise of welfare liberalism. It continued to grow in response of communism and political fear of levelling.

19
Q

Why are conservatives opposed to communism?

A

Because of their radically opposed view of human nature and because of the centralization of power that comes with communism.

20
Q

Why are tory and Neo conservatives wary of capitalism?

A

Torys are suspicious of capitalism because of the unregulated market and thus unregulated self-interest which could lead to unchecked desires. Neoconservatives are suspicious because they believe capitalism undermines its own moral and intellectual foundations.
