Look for:

• Velar Elevation: nasal reflux
• Epiglottic Inversion: penetration and valleculae retention
• Laryngeal Elevation: valleculae retention, penetration, pyriform retention
• Vocal Fold adduction: penetration, aspiration
• Peristalsis: pharyngeal retention

Question 2

MBS- Esophageal Phase

Answer 2

Look for:

• Cricopharyngeal dilation: pyriform retention
• Peristalsis: esophageal retention
• Structural integrity: stenosis (narrowing), fistula (passage), diverticulum (passage)

MBS- Advantages

Answer 3

• Visualize all phases of the swallow
• Can often ID contributing impairment
• Can see compensatory strategy effectiveness
