Q

What is the Elson test?

A

It is a test to determine the continuity of the central slip. PIP flexed over the edge of a table, active extension of the middle phalanx against resistance results in active extension of DIP joint. This means the central slip is ruptured.

Q

What is the Ligament of Landsmeer?

A

Is the oblique retinacular ligament. It runs from the fibro osseous sheath at the proximal phalanx, volar to the axis of rotation of the PIP joint, dorsal to the axis of rotation of the DIP joint and inserts into the extensor tendon. Tightness or contracture results in less flexion of DIP joint when PIP joint is extended.

Q

What is a lumbrical plus finger?

A

Shortening of the flexor digitorum profundus usually secondary to amputation leads to increased tension on the lumbrical causing paradoxical PIP joint extension with attempts at flexion or at least limits flexion of PIP joint with flexion attempt.
