26.1 (Male Reproductive System) Flashcards
Identify the structures and functions of the male external genitalia and internal genitalia. (41 cards)
What are the three main parts of the male reproductive system?
Gonads (testes), accessory glands, and external genitalia
What is the function of the gonads (testes)?
Produce sperm and hormones (like testosterone)
What is the function of the accessory glands?
Secrete fluids that mix with sperm
What is the function of the external genitalia?
Visible outside the body (penis, scrotum)
Quick fact
The scrotum keeps testes 2-3 degrees celsius cooler than body temperature, this is ideal for sperm production!
What are the three parts of the male external genitalia?
Penis, urethra, and scrotum
What is the function of the penis?
Delivers sperm into the female reproductive tract
What is the function of the urethra?
Conducts semen (and urine) to the outside
What is the function of the scrotum?
Protects and supports the testes; regulates temperature
What are the six parts of the male internal genitalia? (reproductive tract and glands)
Ductus deferens, seminal glands (vesicles), prostate gland, bulbo-urethral glands, epidymis, and testes
What is the function of the ductus deferens?
Carries sperm from epidymis to ejaculatory duct
What is the function of the seminal glands (vesicles)?
Add fructose-rich fluid (energy for sperm)
What is the function of the prostate gland?
Adds enzymes and an antibiotic to semen
What is the function of the bulb-urethral glands?
Secrete mucus that neutralizes urine in urethra
What is the function of the epidymis?
Sperm mature and are stored here
What is the function of the testes?
Produce sperm and hormones (testosterone)
What are gametes?
Reproductive cells. Male Gametes = Sperm
What are the gonads?
Reproductive organs (testes in males) that produce gametes and hormones
What is semen?
Fluid containing sperm and secretions from accessory glands
What is erectile tissue?
Specialized tissue that fills with blood during sexual arousal, causing an erection
What is the ductus deferens?
A tube that transports sperm from the epidymis to the prostate gland
What are the seminal glands?
Glands that secrete fluid to make up most of the semen volume
What is the prostate gland?
Produces fluid and enzymes that help nourish sperm
What are the bulbs-urethral glands?
Produce lubricating mucus that protects sperm and the urethra
