Q

what is binet’s view on intelligence?

name something he did in his career to develop the understanding of intelligence?

A

binet developed the first intelligence test widely used around the world. The test was designed to assess and predict performance at school. he used this test in the 1900’s when the french gov made a law that all children went to school so he used his test on intelligence to identify the children with learning dificulties.

binet viewed intelligence as a general ability associated with specific, but related, mental functions such as reasoning, memory, vocabulary, length and quality of attention, and perceptual judgement.

he also assumed intelligence is age related

A

“Wechsler viewed intelligence as the ‘global and aggregate capacity to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with the environment’.”

he believed that many psychologist viewed intelligence too narrow and only tested primary abilities that allow us to be good or not good at school

A

analytical intelligence is the ability to complete academic problem solving tasks. These types of tasks usually involve a single correct answer.Analytical intelligence is also the ability to analyse or break down problems and devise strategies to solve them.
Creative intelligence is the ability to deal with new and unusual situations by drawing from existing skills and knowledge.
creative intelligence also involves using your imagination to create a story, paint an artwork or an advertisement creative intelligence is unlike analytical intelligence because creative intelligence is open ended with many different answers.
practical intelligence is the ability to adapt to everyday life by drawing from existing knowledge and skills you would use practical intelligence with both personal and practical problems you may also use practical intelligence when placed in an un usual situation in life.

believes successful intelligence is if a individual is sufficiently strong in the three intelligences, then the three parts will be well balanced and when this occurs the person will have what he calls successful intelligence

Q

what is involved in wechslr’s test

A
  • There are a variety of Wechsler tests - dependent on age and ability (WAIS - R - NI). Most widely used is the WAIS (Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale) - takes 90min to complete.
    • contains 10 core (‘compulsory’) tests which covers the following four categories:
    • Verbal Comprehension
    • Perpetual Reasoning
    • Verbal Memory
    • Processing Speed
    • balance of language dependent and non-language dependent - useful for people with language difficulties
    • scores are obtained for each category and can be calculated together to identify IQ score.
    • Used for diagnostic purpose - can you think of any?
