(11 cards)
Atmosphere
the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
Greenhouse effect
The greenhouse effect is defined as when the Earth’s atmosphere becomes thick with gases and substances which trap the sun’s radiation
Greenhouse gas
Carbon dioxide, methane
Global warming
a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere
Photosynthesis
the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water
Respiration
a process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide
Combustion
rapid chemical combination of a substance with oxygen, involving the production of heat and light
Carbon sink
a forest, ocean, or other natural environment viewed in terms of its ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Fossil fuels
a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms.
Carbon cycle
carbon nuclei are repeatedly formed and broken down in the conversion of hydrogen into helium.
Climate change
a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.
