2.7 Electrochemistry Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is electrolysis ?
Electrolysis is the decomposition of a liquid electrolyte using a direct current of electricity
What is an electrolyte ?
An electrolyte is a liquid or solution which contains electricity and is decomposed by it
What is the negative electrode called ?
The negative electrode is called the cathode
What is the positive electrode called ?
The positive electrode is called the anode
What are common electrolytes ?
- Molten ionic compounds
- Aqueous ionic compounds
Why do electrolytes conduct electricity ?
Electrolytes conduct electricity as the ions are free to move and carry charge
What is a direct current of electricity ?
A direct current of electricity is the type of current produced by a battery and it is the flow of electrons from a positive to a negative terminal on the battery. The electrons cause reactions to occur in the electrolyte
What causes reactions to occur in the electrolyte ?
The electrons cause reactions to occur in the electrolyte
What are inert electrodes ?
Inert electrodes do not take part in electrolysis reactions
What are electrodes ?
Electrodes are solid conductors usually made from metal or carbon
What apparatus is needed to carry out electrolysis ?
- A battery/ cell
- A bulb (to show that the current is flowing)
- Positive and negative cathodes
- A crucible
- A pipeclay triangle
- Tripod
- Bunsen burner
What ions are attracted to the negative electrode (cathode) ?
Positive ions are attracted to the cathode
What ions are attracted to the positive electrode (anode) ?
Negative ions are attracted to the anode
In what direction do the electrons flow in a direct current (battery) ?
The flow of electrons goes from the positive terminal to the negative terminal on the battery
