Life processes Flashcards
Synthesis
To combine simple substances chemically to build complex substances (simple -> complex, or small -> large
Respiration
Chemical reactions to produce energy (energy in food changing to a form the cell can use)
Excretion
The removal of metabolic wastes (ex: co2, h2o, salt, urea
Nutrition
(Digestion) taking in materials from the environment and changing it into a form the cell can use.
Transport/circulation
Substances entering and leaving cells, getting distributed within the cells. (Absorb and circulate/distribute
Growth
Involves an increase in size and number of cells.
Regulation
Controlling all various activities of an organism and responding to environmental changes
Reproduction
The production of new organisms (not necessary for survival of individual - necessary for continuation of species)
Metabolism
All the chemical activities necessary to keep you alive.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a stable internal environment in spite of changes in the external environment. An internal balance.
