Describe the origins and evolution of theories used to support family nursing practice
- since 1950, at least 19 disciplines have studied the family. Recently, this interdisciplinary work has become known as family social science.
- 1960s initially nursing theorist were only concerned with the individual but Nurse Practitioner focused on the family.
- 1980 focuses on the care of the family not just the individual - family nurses gathered to discuss and share family nursing concept and defined scope of practice.
- 1990 Journal of family nursing created
- 2000 quality and quantity of family nursing research increases
- WHO document Health for All in the 21st century and calls for support of families
Define family as client, context, system, and component of society?
Family context - individual is the foreground, the family is background. The family serves as context for the individual as either a resource or stressor (maternal-child nursing)
Family client - assessment on all family members. all family are foreground
Family system - focus is on the family as a whole as the client. The whole is more than the sum of its parts, the interaction between the members become the target for the nursing intervention
Family as Component of Society - family is viewed as one of many institution in society. The family as a whole interacts with other institution to receive, exchange, or give communication and services
