2.7.5. Integration of Cartilage and Bone Healing Flashcards
(7 cards)
Stages in Bone Healing
1) bleeding
2) inflammation
3) proliferation
4) repair and remodeling
What makes up the primary (soft) callus?
type 1 collagen (initially woven bone)
What changes to make the secondary (hard) callus?
mineralization; happens late in healing/remodeling
Match the macro process to it’s micro process:
Soft callus, fracture line gets fuzzy (osteoid being laid down by osteoblasts): motion is murky
Micro process:
new osteocytes
Second stage of bone healing
Match the macro process to it’s micro process:
Blood, Trauma, Clot, Fracture Line: fracture Line gets bigger (osteoclasts are working) and motion is bad for healing
Micro processes:
Clotting factors, Platelets, Neural signalling, Microtrauma
Inflammatory Cascade
first stage of bone healing
Match the macro process to it’s micro process:
Hard callus, fracture site stronger: motion is good for healing
Micro processes:
Resorption, remodeling, age of patient, calcium metabolism
third stage of bone healing
How is tendon/ligamentous healing different from bone healing?
No blood vessels, therefore there isn’t release a bleeding phase and there in a limited inflammatory phase. Tendons do not heal like bones, albeit similarly
