How did Madero come to power?

A

Povfiriato held elections every four years but they were always skewed in his favour, Madero had strong beliefs, first to run against Povfiriato in years, wanted to install democracy, thought he was a saviour for the country, Povfiriato put him in jail on the day of the election, Madero escaped, called Mexicans to arms Novemeber 20th, many responded, began Great Revolution, attacked government forces

What problems faced Madero and why was he overthrown?

A

Overly legal, wanted laws to be passed by Congress (members from Povfiriato’s government), Congress blocked him, Madero not political enough to outmanoeuvre Congress, people turn on him, 1913 arrested and assassinated by General Huerta.

A

US ambassador in Mexico supported the assassination, didn’t have the power to approve the assassination, blow for US-Mexican relations.

How did the newly elected President Wilson react to Madero’s assassination and Huerta?

A

Wilson refused to recognise Huerta for a year and a half, grew tired of Huerta, in 1914 sent warships to Mexico and captured Veracruz (Mexico’s biggest port which accounted for 70% of trade), US embargo on arms, by taking over the port they stopped the importation of weapons from other countries.

How did WW1 effect the USA’s attitude towards Mexico?

A

Wilson tries to find someone he can trust to be President of Mexico, wary of the situation in Europe, Wilson worries about being pulled into a Civil War in Mexico, doesn’t want to US army/navy to be permanently in Mexico.

What changed US attitudes towards Mexico in 1914-15?

A

Carranza captured Mexico City, took over the Mexican army and brought SOME stability to Mexico, US recognises Carranza in 1915 and hopes he will maintain stability.

A

Villa Zapata, unhappy with the US, raided Columbus, New Mexico in retaliation.

A

Full scale attack on Mexico (1916-1917) to look for Villa Zapata who evaded them for over a year, US forces led by Pershing, ended when the US joined WW1.

A

1917, constitutional convention, constitution still in place today, fairly radical, negatively effected US interests in Mexico, now had to pay to mine land, affects US companies already mining in Mexico and the petroleum industry.
