What is a health disparity?

A

“The difference in health status among groups”

Exs of health inequities experiences by marginalized populations

  • Aboriginals: higher likeliness to smoke cigarettes leading to higher levels for lung & other cancers, breathing problems
  • social exclusion: higher rates for aborig. Cdns, recent immigrants, woman, disabled people ; leading to diabetes & other chronic diseases (respiratory& cardiovascular)
  • suicide rate: higher among 1st nation communities or FN on reserve
  • unable to get prescriptions filled or treatment done: Cdns with below average incomes
  • disparities faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGBT) community include less access to insurance & health care services

  • Colonization & inter generational trauma
  • isolation
  • barriers in education & of language

Ex: domination of whites over aboriginals; set up reserves (set up to assimilate the aboriginal population), cultural values taken away, mistrust was rooted
-history of govt not following up with treaties & not being honest in that way (further roots distrust)

Briefly describe the ABCs of cultural competence?

A

1) affective: reflects attitude to, awareness, & sensitivity of cultural values (ex. Humility of awareness of ongoing learning, self awareness of values &beliefs &biases, being non judgemental in encountering situations or perspectives that are differ from those of the norm)
2) behavioural: reflects the skills/ actions necessary to be effective in cross cultural encounters (ex. Think about the way you communicate (verbal (tone) & non verbal (personal touch, silences)) to someone from another culture
3) cognitive: includes cultural knowledge, theory, research, & cross cultural approaches to health (ex: the thinking/intellectual piece; I don’t know much about aboriginal peoples so I am going to get that intellectual knowledge for myself by taking a class on them)

A

-B/c we have such a diverse culture
-culturally as a whole; we need to take our cultural awareness seriously & think about how we are going to demonstrate cultural competency
-we demonstrate this by considering the health disparities & the knowledge of any cultural population
