Q

Treat HepB in an adult?

A

Nothing - observe for first 6mo bc 80% chance he/she will fight it off on their own w/out chronic disease

Q

Immune tolerance and HepB

-What is it?

A

-seen in babies who get HepB - their immune system isnt ready to mount an attack yet so the virus runs rampant. Immune system not going yet means no destruction of HepB infected hepatocytes = no hepatitis

Q

Only curative treatment for HepB?

A

Interferon! - cannot use in patients with cirrhosis

-the pills only stop continued liver damage but lifelong treatment

16
Q

HepD

  • what class/family?
  • how does it inftect?
A
  • delta

- needs HepB to replicate

17
Q

Special thing about HepE?

A

causes fulminant hep failure in pregnant women

in other people wokrs just like HepA!

18
Q

HepC virus family?

A

flavivirus

19
Q

Interesting effect of HepC on the liver?

A

The liver enzymes can go up at certain times or down. So just because you check liver enzymes one day and they are low does not mean that they dont have the virus

20
Q

HepC and ALT relationship:

A

No correlation! Can go up or down or be normal at times!

21
Q

HepC and alcohol relationship:

A

Alcohol causes disease to progress MUCH FASTER!

22
Q

End point of sustained virological response:

A

cant get rid of it but down to levels where it cant divide and do damage

not a cure

23
Q

WHy pegilate the drug interferon?

A

basically adding a huge protein onto the drug = longer drug life

24
Q

Best new medication for HepC

A

Harvoni!
