A zone of ecological transition between the Sahara to the north and the wetter savannas and forest of the south

Economic measures to reduce government spending and encourage private sector, refinance foreign debt. Triggers cutbacks in government supported services and food subsidies that harm the poor

The burning of vegetation to release fertilizing ash and then planting crops. Once exhausted, it is abandoned until fertility returns
