Q

Why didn’t the white colonists respect the Aboriginal people’s claim to the land?

A

The British only saw that Australia’s land was not used in the European way; that is, it was not farmed. So they described Australia as terra nullius. This means unused or waste lands that could be taken without asking permission. Colonists produced food by farming, and powerful people soon discovered that wealth could be produced by grazing sheep for wool. Both activities required the taking of Aboriginal land

Q

How did governments policy towards indigenous Australians change throughout the 1800?

A

At first they were told to make a good relationship with the natives by the king and whilst some tried many people slowly started to ignore this when the aboriginals started to defend themselves and fight back. In 1820 more men were taking aboriginal land. In 1835 John Batman made a treaty with the indigenous but was then called ilegal as it broke terra nulius.

What happened at Myall creek?

A

It was the first massacre in which white setelers were prosecuted for killing the aboriginals. This is because when a group of 12 armed men killed a tribe of indigenous people, George Anderson was able to save one young boy and then testified against the murders and won.
