Muscles Flashcards
Masseter
It’s origin is the zygomatic Temporal arch.
It inserts on the angle of the mandible
This muscle elevates and protracts the jaw.
Muscle of facial expression (CN7)
It’s origin and insertion is on the superficial tissue of the face.
It’s action is for facial expressions
Temporalis
It originates on the frontal and parietal
It inserts on the coronoid process of the mandible
This muscle elevates the jaw
Sternocleidomastoid
It originates on the sternum and clavicle
It inserts on the mastoid process
This muscle is in charge of flexion and rotation of the head
External intercostals
It originates on the inferior margin of the rib above
It inserts on the superior margin of the rib below
This muscle is in charge of inspiration and expiration
Internal and innermost intercostals
It originates on inferior margin of the rib above
It inserts on the superior margin of the rib below
It’s action is inspiration and expiration
Obliques:
External, internal, and transverse abdominis
They originate on the ribs
They insert of the linea Alba via the rectus sheath
It’s action is ipsilateral rotation with unilateral contraction and bilateral contraction which results in flexion at the waist
Rectus abdominis
It originates on the pubis
It inserts on the xiphoid and coastal cartilage
It’s job is flexion at the waist
Trapezius
It originates on the Occipital and thoracic vertebrae
It inserts on the scapula and the clavicle
The action of this muscle as head extension, respiration, back extension, and shoulder retraction
Rhomboid major and minor
They originate on the thoracic vertebrae
These insert on the medial border of the scapula
Their job is for shoulder retraction and it braces the shoulder
Levator scapulae
It originates on the transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae
It inserts on the superior angle of the scapula
It’s job is to elevate the scapula
Erector spinae (spinalis,longissimus, and iliocostalis)
They originate on the vertebral processes
They insert on the superior angle of the scapula
Their actions are to erect the spine and some lateral flexion
Pectoralis minor
It originates on ribs four through six
It inserts on the coracoid process
It’s action is to draw the scapula laterally and it also helps in respiration
Pectoralis major
It originates on the clavicle, sternum, coastal cartilages numbers one through six
It inserts on the anterior surface of the proximal humerus
It’s action is to flex, adduct, and medially rotate the humerus
Serratus Anterior
It originates on the anterior chest wall (on ribs)
It inserts on the anterior surface of the medial border of the scapula
It’s action is scapular protraction, depression, and lateral rotation
Deltoid
It originates on the scapula and the clavicle
It inserts on the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus
It’s action is shoulder abduction, flexion, extension
Teres major
It originates on the inferior angle of the scapula
It inserts on the anterior surface of the proximal humerus
It’s action is to medially rotate and extend the arm
Latissimus Dorsi
It originates on that ilium, lower thoracic and lumbar vertebrae
It inserts on the anterior surface of the proximal humerus
It’s action is to medially rotate and extend the arm
Supraspinatus
It originates on the posterior scapula
It inserts on the greater tubercle of the humerus
It’s job is to stabilize the shoulder joint and it assists in abduction of the arm
Infraspinatus
It originates on the posterior scapula
It inserts on the greater tubercle of the humerus
It’s job is to stabilize the shoulder joint and assist in abduction of the arm
Teres minor
It originates on the lateral border and the posterior surface of the scapula
It inserts on the greater tubercle of the humerus
It’s action is to stabilize the shoulder joint and assist in abduction of the arm
Subscapularis
It originates on the anterior surface of the scapula
It inserts on the lesser tubercle
It’s action is to stabilize the shoulder joint and to medially rotate the arm
Diaphragm
It originates and inserts on the peripheral body wall structures
It’s action is to separate thoracic and abdominal cavity. It also assist in breathing
Pelvic floor muscles (perinium)
They originate and insert on the pubis, ischium, and the Coccyx
Their actions are to keep the visceral organs from passing through the pelvic outlet. They also assist with continence and much more
Biceps brachii
They originate on the scapula
It inserts on the radial tuberosity
It’s action is flexion at the forearm
Brachialis
It originates at the anterior of the distal humerus
It inserts at the coronoid process of the ulna
It’s job is flexion at the forearm
