Chapter 7 The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 6 types of neuroglial cells?
- Astrocytes
- Microglia
- Ependymal cells
- Oligodendrocytes
- Schwann cells
- Satellite cells
What are the two cell types of the nervous system?
- Supporting cells (neuroglia)
2. Neurons
What are the 4 glial cells found in the CNS?
- Astrocytes
- Microglia
- Ependymal cells
- Oligodendrocytes
What are the 2 glial cells found in the PNS?
- Schwann cells
2. Satellite cells
What 2 glial cells produce the myelin sheath?
- Schwann cells
2. Oligodendrocytes
What is the basic function of the neuron?
To transmit messages through out the body
What is a nuclei ?
Cell bodies found in clusters in the CNS
What are ganglion?
A group of nerve cell bodies found in the PNS
Many- “ganglia”
What is gray matter?
Unmyelinated fibers and cell bodies in the CNS
What is white matter?
Sense collections of myelinated fibers in PNS
What do the afferent (sensory) neurons do?
They carry impulses from sensory receptors to the CNS
What do efferent (motor) neurons do?
They carry impulses from the CNS to the effectors
What do they inter (association) neurons do?
They connect motor and sensory neurons at the CNS
Reflexes are….
Rapid
Predictable
Involuntary responses
Somatic “body” reflexes do what?
Stimulate skeletal (voluntary) muscles
