2.a Fractions Flashcards
(31 cards)
What is a proper fraction?
A proper fraction is when the numerator is less than the denominator
What is an improper fraction?
An improper fraction is when the numerator is greater than the denominator
Which type of fraction is this: 5/4
improper fraction, as the numerator is greater than the denominator
What is a mixed number?
A whole number followed by a proper fraction
eg. 5 2/3
An improper fraction can be converted to a ______
mixed number
What is the LCD?
The smallest nonzero whole number that is divisible by each of the denominators
What is the LCD of 1/6, 1/5 and 1/12?
60
How do you find the LCD?
List the multiples of each denominator, and find the smallest number that is common in each list.
What can this be rewritten as?
Is this correct?
NO!
The distributive property of division over addition only works when the denominators are the same
To add fractions make sure the ( ) is the same..
Denominator!
What is a shortcut method for adding a/b + c/d?
How do you multiply fractions?
Multiply the numerators of the fractions, multiply the denominators of the fractions
= simplify it
When dividing a fraction, what do you do?
Change to division sign by a multiplication sign, and flip the fraction to the right of the sign.
What is: 5 x 3/4 ?
15/4
multiply 5 by 3!
Do not confuse
5 x 3/4
with 5 + 3/4
What are the two ways in which you can simplify fractions?
1) Top-and-bottom simplification
2) Cross simplification
What is “top-and-bottom simplification”?
Dividing a fraction’s numerator and denominator by the same value to create a simplified fraction
What is “cross simplification”?
Simplify the fractions by taking the numerator of one fraction and the denominator of another fraction, dividing both numbers by the same value
How could you cross simplify this?
Can cross simplification be performed on fractions that are not adjacent?
YES!
Is this valid cross-simplification?
Yes!
Cross simplification can be performed on fractions that are NOT adjacent
What is a reciprocal?
1 over that number
eg. reciprocal of 5 is 1/5
How could you rewrite: 1 / (a/b) ?
What is the reciprocal of 1/5?
