What does ESD stand for?
Electrostatic Discharge
What is ESD?
The sudden flow of electricity between two electrically
charged objects.
How is ESD caused?
By the buildup of electrical charge (static electricity) on one surface that is suddenly transferred to another surface when they touch.
How does static electricity buildup?
Can be caused by friction between dissimilar materials and can be transferred through difference of potential.
What is the difference of potential?
The difference of electrical potential between two points
When does ESD occur?
When differently charged objects are brought close together or when
the insulating material between the charged objects fails or breaks down
How do electronics manufacturers establish electrostatic protective areas free of static?
They employ measures to prevent charge buildup, such as maintaining potentials and measures to remove static (such as grounding human workers, providing antistatic devices, and controlling humidity).
ESD can cause a range of harmful effects in the industry, this includes?
Including igniting gas, fuel vapor, and coal dust. We can also see a failure of solid-state electronics components such as integrated circuits. These can suffer permanent damage when subjected to high voltages in the form of ESD.
What is “triboelectricity”?
The process by which voltage charges are developed is friction and the resultant charge is triboelectricity
What is “triboelectricity” commonly referred to as?
static electricity or electricity at rest
What are the three types of failures that ESD can cause in electronic equipment?
catastrophic, intermittent, and latent
What are the results of a catastrophic failure?
This results in total failure of the component(s) or electronic circuit(s).
When the heat from an ESD visibly melts or welds components and immediately destroys them, it’s known as?
A catastrophic ESD event
Catastrophic ESD’s are to blame for what percentage of all defects caused by ESD?
10%
What are the results of an intermittent failure?
This results in irregular failure of the component(s) or electronic circuit(s). ESD may cause minor damage to components within the equipment. Because of this damage, they sometimes work correctly and sometimes not.
What are the results of a latent failure?
This is a delayed failure of the component(s) or electronic circuit(s). A component or electronic circuit appears to operate normally but may experience premature failure prior to the expected life span.
What are the three primary control measures for preventing ESD buildup?
Workstation and personnel grounding, handling precautions, protective packaging
With the ESD system, you are not directly grounded because…?
a 1 Mega ohm (1MΩ) resistor is within the wrist strap and will limit the current flow through you to a safe level should you meet a high-voltage electrical circuit.
Guidelines for handling ESDS items are provided in what literature?
MILSTD-1686C, Electrostatic Discharge Control Program for Protection of Electrical and Electronic Parts, Assemblies and Equipment (Excluding Electrically Initiated Explosive Devices) and MIL HDBK-263B, Electrostatic Discharge Control Program for Protection of Electrical and Electronic Parts, Assemblies and Equipment (Excluding Electrically Initiated Explosive Devices).
General precaution: Be sure that all personnel handling ESDS devices are…?
grounded
General precaution: Place all ESDS items on…?
The workstation prior to opening.
General precaution: Ensure all hand tools are…?
properly grounded
General precaution: When removing ESDS circuit cards from equipment…?
Ensure you are at the same potential as the equipment.
General precaution: Do not remove ESDS items from packages until…?
Ready for use
