How do elements react with oxygen?
Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Zinc, Iron, Nickel, Tin: Burn in Oxygen
Lead, Copper, Mercury, Silver: Tarnish (metal oxide formed on surface) does not burn
Gold, Platinum: No reaction
How do elements react with water?
Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium: Fizzes with cold water
Aluminium, Zinc, Iron, Nickel, Tin, Lead,Copper, Mercury, Silver, Gold, Platinum: No reaction
How do elements react with acid?
Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Zinc, Iron, Nickel, Tin, Lead: Fizzes
Copper, Mercury, Silver, Gold, Platinum: No reaction
What does metal + oxygen make?
Metal + Oxygen -> Metal Oxide
What does metal + acid make?
Metal + acid -> Salt + Hydrogen
What does metal + water make?
Metal + water -> Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
What is a displacement reaction?
A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from a compound

What is oxidation?
- Metal atoms are oxidised as they react as they lose electrons
- They act as reducing agents they give electrons to the substance they react with
What is reduction?
- Non metal atoms are reduced as they react as they gain electrons
- They act as oxidising agents as they gain an electron from they react with
Why are displacement reactions redox reactions?
Both Oxidation and reduction have taken place in these displacement reactions.
Under what condition does iron rust?
- Water + Oxygen
What is Barrier Coatings?
- Applying a protective layer to the metal surface to prevent exposure to air and moisture
What are some examples of barrier coatings?
Paint, Plastic, Powder coatings (eg. epoxy, nylon, urethane)
What is Galvanizing?
Electroplating a layer of zinc as a protective coating. This is a form of sacrificial protection.
What are some examples of galvanizing?
- Car bodies and parts because it provides a smooth, paintable surface and excellent corrosion resis
- Used in building materials like roofing, wall panels, and structural beams to protect against rust
What is Hot Dip Galvanizing?
Dipping steel into molten zinc to create a protective alloy coating
What are some examples of hot dip galvanizing?
- Artistic sculptures, playground equipment
What is Alloyed Steel?
Mixing with other metals to change the properties of the metal. In this case producing a mixture with corrosion-resistant properties
What are some examples of alloyed steel?
- Stainless steel (contains nickel and chromium)
What is Oil Coating?
Using oil to create a barrier that prevents moisture from reaching the metal surface
What are some examples of oil coating?
- Machine parts, tools
What is Sacrificial Protection?
Attaching a more reactive metal to the protected metal, which corrodes instead of the protected metal
What are some examples of sacrificial protection?
- Zinc bars on steel ships, magnesium anodes on pipelines
