Militarism
A policy of glorifying military strength & maintaining a standing army prepared for war through the buildup of modern military equipment & technology.
Imperialism
A policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries socially, politically, economically and/or culturally (SPEC).
System of Alliances
A formal agreement or pact, especially a military one, between two or more countries to achieve a particular goal.
Nationalism
The belief that people should be loyal to their nation-to people with whom they share a common culture, language & history. To many people the willingness to die for one’s country was the purest form of nationalism.
Totalitarianism
A form of government in which the state attempts to assert control over every aspect of public and private life
Name the main characteristics of Totalitarianism
- Dictatorship or One-Man Rule
- Leader is glorified as a hero
- Denied individual rights
- Censorship and Indoctrination
- One Party Rule
- Control by State over most aspects of life
- Use of secret police to control citizens

Characteristics of Communism
- No Religion
- No private ownership, govt. owns all business
- Supported by the workers

Religious Control- Some Freedom but not for Jews
Unifying Idea- Germans as the ‘master race’
Use of Terror- Millions killed, particularly Jews, homosexuals, gypsies (Romani) and communists
Media- Total Control (Censorship)
Facism
Religious Control- Catholicism was state religion, but free choice. No persecution of Jews
Unifying Idea- Strongly Nationalistic
Use of Terror- Only 23 political prisoners executed from 1926-1944. 4,000 imprisoned

14 Points
Written by President Woodrow Wilson, this treaty addressed the issues (the 14 points) that caused the war (No more secret alliances, no more Imperialism, etc.)
The Treaty of Versailles
Written by France and Great Britain, this treaty was signed at the end of WWI as a ‘fuck you’ to Germany. Germany was forced to give up land to form Poland and give back Alsace-Lorraine to France. They were forced to decrease their military, and completely remove military on the French-German border. They had to give up all over-seas colonies, and sign a guilt clause (as well as pay damages to France and Great Britain)

- Send %90 German soldiers to the western front (assuming that Russia would take time to deploy soldiers and that France would fall easily) and send %10 to the eastern front.
