3. Biosensing Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
What is a biosensor?
A
A device that combines a biological component with a physical transducer to measure signals in the body.
2
Q
What is the basic structure of a biosensor?
A
- Receptor interacts with analyte
- Transducer - converts into electrical signal.
3
Q
What is oxidation and reduction?
A
Oxidation - loss of electrons (+ions)
Reduction - gain of electrons (-ions)
4
Q
What happens when a metal electrode is in a solution? What is EDL?
A
Metal atoms can ionise and release electrons. Electrical double layer—ions from solution can accumulate at the electrode interface, influencing the signal.
5
Q
What is half cell potential?
A
Electrode potential-—potential difference between a metal electrode and a solution containing its ions
6
Q
What makes a good biosensor?
A
See the cheat sheet.
