3- Redox I Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is oxidation?
loss of electrons
What is reduction?
gain of electrons
What are oxidising agents?
something that forces another species to be oxidised so it itself gains electrons and therefore is reduced
What are reducing agents?
something that forces another species to be reduced so it itself loses electrons so is oxidised
What is a disproportionation reaction?
a reaction that involves one species that is simultaneously oxidised and reduced
What is an oxidation number?
the charge that an ion has or the charge that it would have if it were fully ionic
What is the oxidation number of an uncombined element?
zero
What is the sum of oxidation numbers in a neutral compound?
zero
What is the sum of oxidation numbers in an ion?
the sum is equal to the charge
Does the more electronegative element have a positive or negative oxidation number?
negative
What is the oxidation number of fluorine (always)
-1
What is the oxidation number of hydrogen?
+1
or with less electronegative elements it is -1
What is the oxidation number of oxygen?
-2
peroxides: -1
fluorine: +
How will oxidation numbers change during reduction?
decreases
How will oxidation numbers change during oxidation?
increase
What is a systematic name of a compound?
when the oxidation state of an element is shown with roman numerals
What must you make sure is the same when combining half equations to make a full equation?
the number of electrons
